Resisting Political Hyper-Polarization in Favor of the Way of Jesus
When Satan tempted Jesus in the desert, one of the key lines of seduction was to entice Jesus toward political power. After all, wouldn’t the world be better with Jesus in charge? Couldn’t he do so much good? Similarly, his own followers wanted to crown him king. But Jesus resisted Satan from without and his followers from within, never wavering that his Kingdom is not of this world. Yet our culture has never been more politically polarized, anxious, and driven to extremes by algorithms which benefit from our attention, and not from our cooperation. How can we be politically engaged without looking toward political religiosity, whether that’s devotion to the right or the left? How can we uphold kingdom causes in kingdom ways?
